9-September 11 2012 MinutesCity of Nederland Parks Advisory Board Minutes 12:01 p.m. September 11, 2012 1. MEETING The meeting was held September 11, 2012 at the City of Nederland Recreation Center at 2301 Avenue H, Nederland, Texas and was called to order by Brent Weaver. MEMBERS PRESENT: Joella Harvey, Sylvia Root, Stephanie Gallagher, Brent Weaver MEMBERS ABSENT: Marty Byrd CITY STAFF PRESENT: Angela Fanette, Parks and Recreation Supervisor 2. APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING Sylvia Root made a motion to approve the previous meeting’s minutes. Stephanie Gallagher seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried. 3. DISCUSSION/POSSIBLE ACTION: a. Discussion/possible action regarding usage of the building for Twirl America. Angela Fanette presented an update to the program, in that in order to advertise the program, Twirling classes would not start until October 2012. No action was taken. b. Discussion of upcoming project “National Night Out” for October 9, 2012. The Nederland Parks Department, Police Department, and Fire Department will be participating in the National Night Out program. National Night Out is a crime prevention and community awareness program to encourage citizen to know their neighbors. Domino’s Pizza, LifeShare Blood Centers, NHS Cheerleaders and Big Ned, a movie in the Park and a moon bounce will be some of the events happening on Boston Avenue. The date has been moved to October 9, as fire prevention week follows National Night Out and the departments would like to utilize resources effectively for the event. No action was taken. c. Discussion of “Trunk or Treat” participation. Angela Fanette stated that the department would be participating in Trunk or Treat on Boston Ave. on October 31, 2012. Volunteers are needed for the event, and Parks Board is invited to attend. No action was taken. d. Discussion/possible action of use of the gym for Futsal from Randy Rich for January, 2013. Angela Fanette presented a request from Randy Rich to use the gym for a spring futsal program. Fees would be exactly the same as previous seasons with the City of Nederland receiving 20% of the sign up fees for usage. Times would be coordinated with programming and availability of the Recreation Center, to end by 2pm. Brent Weaver made a motion to approve the usage of the gym for futsal. Sylvia Root seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried. e. Discussion/possible action of use of the gym for ASK for January, 2013. Angela Fanette presented a request from ASK for use of the gym for one hour each Saturday in January, as part of the continued partnership between the City of Nederland and Adaptive Sports for Kids. Fees would be waived for usage. Times of usage would be coordinated with other programming and the gym would be available for public use by 2pm. Sylvia Root made a motion to approve the usage. Brent Weaver seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried. 4. REPORTS a. Receive the Pool End of Season Report. Angela Fanette reported highlights of the summer pool season, including the total revenue of the pool at just under $75,000. The report will be presented to the City Council at the next meeting on September 24, 2012. b. Report on the status of order for banners for the Heritage Festival. Banners are currently being generated for art work for the Nederland Heritage Festival to place on Boston Avenue. The Heritage Festival will gift the money for this project, and the banners will be placed on Boston from January until the Festival is complete. The banners will be 30 x 48 inches, and due to the change in length, there was savings of $1000.00. Mrs. Hollier and the Heritage Festival board had agreed to allow the department to keep the overage in donation to assist in other department needs. The money will be placed in the Parks Special Fund. c. Report on Bench Donation. At the September 24, 2012 Council Meeting, the South County Breakfast Lions Club will present a donation for a bench for Tex Ritter Park. No action was taken. 5. ADJOURN There being no other business, Brent Weaver made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Stephanie Gallagher seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.
