1. MEETING
The meeting was held January 15, 2013 at the City of Nederland Recreation Center at
2301 Avenue H, Nederland, Texas and was called to order by Sylvia Root.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Joella Harvey, Sylvia Root, Stephanie Gallagher, Marty Byrd
MEMBERS ABSENT: Brent Weaver
CITY STAFF PRESENT: Angela Fanette, Parks and Recreation Director
2. APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING
Marty Byrd made a motion to approve the previous meeting’s minutes. Stephanie
Gallagher seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.
3. DISCUSSION/POSSIBLE ACTION:
a. Discussion of park repairs and improvements for Rienstra Park.
Discussion of potential improvements for next budget year for Rienstra Park was
given by Angela Fanette. Plans for Rienstra Park include a small coy pond,
crushed granite walking trail, and new park benches. Additionally, the park will
receive additional landscaping once the trail is complete. Angela Fanette asked
for additional ideas and concerns over the next few months so that items could
be researched for funding, and stated Rienstra Park would need to stay “natural
and rustic” as stated in the use of the Park for its dedication. No action was
needed.
b. Discussion of use of Doornbos Park for an NHS Tennis Tournament February 15,
2013.
Nederland High School Tennis Coach Jorge Lopez requested use of the Tennis
Courts and outdoor restroom facility in conjunction with a Tennis Tournament
scheduled for February 15, 2013. Due to time constraints and planning, the
request was presented to Council on January 14, 2013 and approved. No action
was needed.
c. Discussion of City of Nederland Parks & Recreation Department 2013 program
list.
Angela Fanette presented a working list of items to be used to market and
distribute to residents about what the department offers on a yearly basis. In an
effort to conserve money in individual advertising, a parks master list of events
will be used to help let the public know of current events and ways to get
involved in parks and city events. Angela Fanette requested that the Board
review to double check no items or events were omitted. No action was needed.
d. Discussion/possible action of use of Doornbos Park from First Baptist Church
for Easter Festival for March 30, 2013.
A request for use was received from Kristi Bean from First Baptist Church
Nederland to use the softball field and outdoor areas for the Annual Easter
Festival held at Doornbos Park. Additionally, Mrs. Bean has requested the use of
the outdoor restrooms. Angela Fanette recommended approval of the request.
Marty Byrd made a motion to approve the request. Joella Harvey seconded the
motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.
4. COMMUNICATION:
a. Heritage Festival Banners are now installed on Boston Avenue from the Festival
Donation.
b. HOFNOD is scheduled for February 23, 2013.
c. Trash Bash is scheduled for March 2, 2013.
d. Parks Staff working hospitality for Heritage Festival March 16, 2013.
5. ADJOURN
There being no other business, Marty Byrd made a motion to adjourn the meeting.
Joella Harvey seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried. The meeting
concluded at 12:53pm.
