1. MEETING
The meeting was held September 15, 2015 at the City of Nederland Recreation Center at
2301 Avenue H, Nederland, Texas and was called to order by Sylvia Root.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Sylvia Root, Stephanie Gallagher, Brian Gentile
MEMBERS ABSENT: Alex Rupp, Marty Byrd
CITY STAFF PRESENT: Kacie Brown, Recreation Assistant, Angela Fanette, Parks and
Recreation Director
APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING
Brian Gentile made a motion to approve the previous meeting’s minutes. Sylvia Root
seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.
2. DISCUSSION/POSSIBLE ACTION:
a. Discussion regarding Nederland Veterans Park.
Angela Fanette stated that the construction of Nederland’s Veterans Park is
underway. Concrete was poured and brick is soon to follow. The completion of
the first phase of Veterans Park will be Wednesday, November 11, 2015. The City
will also host a park dedication and Veterans Day Celebration. A granite silhouette
of a soldier will be installed on top of the memorial and will be added at a later
phase, along with a digital kiosk that retains the Veterans database. Brian Gentile
asked about the kiosk structure and if it would be vandal resistant. Sylvia Root
recommended the installation of cameras at City Hall to assist in identifying any
vandalism. No action was needed.
b. Discussion regarding pool improvements.
Angela Fanette stated that the City of Nederland is accepting bids for a pool
project until September 15, 2015 until 2pm. Staff will update the board regarding
the bids at the October meeting. A climbing wall was installed and a
refurbishment of our current slide was completed this summer. Both of these
items were funded by the Nederland EDC. No action was needed.
c. Discussion regarding Fall/Winter Programming.
Angela Fanette stated that planning for Fall/Winter Programs has begun. The
Parks and Recreation Department will be facilitating the following: National Night
Out- Tuesday, October 6th from 5pm-8pm on Boston Ave, Monsters in the Park-
Saturday, October 10th from 5-9pm at Doornbos Park, Veteran’s Day-
Wednesday, November 11th on 12th ST at Nederland’s Veterans Park, Christmas
on the Ave- Saturday, December 5th from 1pm-6pm on Boston Ave. The Parks
and Recreation Department will also be participating in the Chamber’s annual
Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 31st on Boston Ave. No action was needed.
d. Discussion/ possible action regarding a request from Paige Batchelor to host
dance programming at the Recreation Center.
A request for use of the Van Gogh room was made from Paige Batchelor to host
dance programming. The request asked for usage of the facility 1 night per week
for 2 hours at a time. Fees for dance classes offered by Paige would be averaged
at $35 per month per dancer with fees being collected online. Stephanie
Gallagher expressed the concern of this request taking away from local dance
studios already in Nederland. After much discussion, the board postponed. A
motion was made by Brian Gentile and seconded by Stephanie Gallagher to
postpone action on this item. All voted aye. Motion carried.
3. ADJOURN
There being no other business, Sylvia Root made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Brian
Gentile seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried. The meeting concluded at
1:01 pm.
