3. DISCUSSION/POSSIBLE ACTION
a. Discussion on Parks facility projects and improvements.
Angela Fanette informed board members that the Recreation Center Metal work
and re-roof is now complete, and the project would be closed out at the next
Council meeting. The wooden posts at the Nederland Pool are rotten, as well as
deterioration in the metal posts and Neches engineers has been engaged to draft
a scope of work for repairs. We hope to have the repairs complete before the
pool opens, but if not, we will work around the pool schedule. The museums at
Tex Ritter Park will also have a scope of work to be determined to make r epairs to
both facilities. The Nederland Pool plaster was inspected and is not in need of
repairs, so that project should be closed soon. No action was needed.
b. Discussion 4th of July Celebration at Doornbos Park.
Angela Fanette informed the board that the July 4th program was set and that the
pyrotechnician for the event is again Phoenix design group. The band for the
event will be Champagne Room. There are six sponsors for the event. Last year’s
event drew approximately six to seven thousand people, and it is anticipated that
this year’s event will do the same. No action was needed.
c. Discussion regarding Summer Pool Program.
Angela Fanette informed the board that the Nederland Pool will open on May
23rd for the first pool party, and the season will begin. Open swim will begin on
May 27th on the weekends until school lets out. We will host Family Nights again
this season, and four of the nights will have movies shown. Three of the movie
nights are sponsored events. Stephanie Gallagher asked if staff was currently
being hired, and Angela Fanette stated that hiring is on-going and that lifeguards
are still needed. Lifeguards are paid $9 and reimbursed for training as an
incentive since each year it is sometimes difficult to find lifeguards. Angela
Fanette stated in the budget process it would be necessary to be sure that rates
are comparable to stay competitive when looking to hire summer staff. No action
was needed.
