3. DISCUSSION/POSSIBLE ACTION
a. Discussion regarding current and proposed park repairs and improvements :
Angela Fanette stated that the electrical project is still on going and with better
weather, conduit should be able to be put down soon. Light repairs are also
being done in the racquetball courts, basketball court, and office areas
separately. Staff is currently prepping the pool for the summer season, and new
ADA lifts have been installed. We are currently waiting on warranty work to be
done on the zero grade area and determining whether the slide will be installed
this budget year or in the future. All other items needed for the pool area
operations are either completed or scheduled to be complete prior to the start
of the season. Angela Fanette also updated the board that a review of mowing
properties and available staff will be done to make sure we can keep up with the
busy mowing season, as we currently do not have an inmate crew to assist for
the summer. No action was needed.
b. Discussion regarding upcoming park programming:
Angela Fanette stated that Easter Fest provided by First Baptist Church
Nederland was scheduled for April 20th. Council approved the usage and staff is
in contact with the church to be sure that everything will be ready for their
usage. ASK baseball season has begun and will run through the month of April;
their first day at Doornbos Park will be March 30th. NISD school usage requests
for end of year parties were approved by Council and the following schools made
a request for usage: Central, C. O. Wilson, Hillcrest, and Highland. No request
was received from Langham or Helena Park. Parties are approved pending
adequate lifeguard staff and provided insurance by NISD for usage. Angela
Fanette stated that we are currently hiring for staff for the pool and the
Nederland Recreation Center, and accepting applications at the department and
City Hall. Also, Angela Fanette stated that spring and summer basketball leagues
and tournaments have been approved by Council for usage and will begin in
April. Staff is also planning for July 4th and currently the band, pyrotechnicians,
food vendors, and the SETVSG are all set for the event. We are still currently
seeking sponsors for the event as well. Angela Fanette stated that in conjunction
with the library, the parks department will be hosting a Meet Me at the Park
event starting in May that will showcase different parks in the community and
host events in the park for preschool aged children. The programs will include
different subject, with the first being Parks & Rex, a dinosaur themed program at
Doornbos Park. No action was needed.
4. COMMUNICATION
a. Miscellaneous: Sylvia Root told the board how she was approached about a dog
park. Angela Fanette stated she was told there was an application for a new dog
hospital with a dog park and boarding kennels at the property and that site plans
were being reviewed by the inspection department. Angela Fanette will try to
gather more information about this. Sylvia Root also reminded everyone that
Trash Bash has been moved to April 6th. Angela Fanette also stated that recycling
areas should be open as well, and that the Regional Planning Commission will also
be hosting a cleanup event in the Silsbee area to drop off hazardous waste.
