1. MEETING
The meeting was held January 8, 2020 in the City of Nederland Recreation Center at
2301 Avenue H, Nederland, Texas and was called to order by Angela Fanette.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Brandin Shaw, Paul Hussey, Alex Rupp, Jason Butler, Brian Gentile
MEMBERS ABSENT: none
CITY STAFF PRESENT: Angela Fanette, Parks and Recreation Director, Stacy Pinner,
Recreation/Aquatics Assistant
APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING
Jason Butler made a motion to approve the previous meeting’s minutes. Brandin Shaw
seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.
2. DISCUSSION/POSSIBLE ACTION
a. Discussion regarding current and proposed park repairs and improvements:
Angela Fanette stated the Nederland Recreation Center gym floor was recently
resurfaced, there is a small area near the front door of the gym that needs to be
repaired to be complete. The Welcome to Nederland sign is missing a letter and
needs repairs, the department is getting quotes for this work. The Veterans Park
kiosk programming is being updated but may require some down time to
complete. The electrical loop at Doornbos Park has been completed, including
the direction of the lights. The outdoor fitness area located near the playground
at Doornbos Park is scheduled for installation and should be completed by spring
break. The pool slide project has been awarded to Progressive Commercial
Aquatics and should be complete for the summer swim season. The
department is getting quotes for Doornbos Park to trim the tree line along the
south side, install a gate at the pool parking lot, fix the softball field, and install a
small gate and fence in the southeast corner to connect the existing fences. No
action was needed.
b. Discussion regarding upcoming park programming:
The Nederland Rotary Club’s Hooked on fishing, not on drugs is scheduled for
Saturday, February 22 at Doornbos Park. Trash Bash is scheduled for Saturday,
March 21. Teams will be making improvements to all six parks such as painting,
cleaning flowerbeds, and picking up trash. Participants will get reusable water
bottles and a free lunch. The Memorial Day Ceremony will be 10:00 a.m. on
Friday, May 22 at Veterans Park. The 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza planning
has started. The 80s cover band, Popgun, is scheduled to perform, and the event
this year will have an 80s theme. Texas Roadhouse has been contacted to donate
food for the Veterans area as in years past. Flyers for these events will be
completed next week. The parks department and the library have teamed up the
past few months to start Meet Me in the Park, a once a month program that
combines story time with activities at different parks around the city. This
program will continue throughout this year and will incorporate the pool during
the summer season. Brandin Shaw asked about the little library at Tex Ritter
Park. Angela stated the library was an art project donated from Nederland High
School. The department has also started preparing for the park bench art
project. Brandin Shaw also asked about Rienstra Park. Angela Fanette stated that
this park was designated as a nature park and the department is working on
improvements to mowing upkeep. No action was needed.
c. Discussion/possible action regarding the Nederland Swimming Pool
Programming:
Stacy Pinner gave updates for the proposed 2020 Nederland Pool schedule.
Changes include the following: extending open swim hours on Tuesday and
Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., allowing for one party on Tuesday and
Wednesday nights, extending open swim hours on Thursday and Friday from
12:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., adding more programing to the morning schedule the
weeks before and after swim lessons, and extending Family Night hours from
6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Alex Rupp made a motion to approve the changes to the
2020 Nederland Pool Schedule. Jason Butler seconded. All voted aye. The motion
carried.
d. Discussion regarding park property located at BLK 4 TR A Hillcrest Terrace Park
3.165:
Angela Fanette stated that she had been contacted regarding the upkeep of the
property and has been told that the Babe Ruth baseball league that is in lease
with the property does not currently have a board. After much discussion
Angela Fanette stated the department will continue to gather information
regarding possible league usage and facility information. No action was needed.
COMMUNICATION
a. Miscellaneous: Jason Butler wanted to thank Brian Gentile for his years of service
to the Parks Advisory Board. Paul Hussey recommended that the meetings start
with the Pledge of Allegiance and offered to bring a flag. All the board members
agreed and it will be added to the next meeting agenda.
3. ADJOURN
There being no other business, Paul Hussey made a motion to adjourn the meeting.
Brandin Shaw seconded the motion. All voted aye. The motion carried. The meeting
concluded at 1:11 p.m.
