MEETING The meeting was held August 16, 2011 at the City of Nederland Parks and Recreation Building, 2301 Ave. H, Nederland, Texas and was called to order by Sylvia Root. MEMBERS PRESENT: Joella Harvey, Stephanie Gallagher, Sylvia Root MEMBERS ABSENT: Brent Weaver, Marty Byrd CITY STAFF PRESENT: Angela Fanette, Parks and Recreation Supervisor, Steve Hamilton, Public Works Director 2. APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING Stephanie Gallagher made a motion to Approve the previous meeting’s minutes. Joella Harvey seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried. 3. DISCUSSION a. Consider a Request from Randy Rich regarding Futsal usage for the Winter for Nederland Recreation Center. Angela Fanette presented a request from Randy Rich to utilize the gymnasium from December 3rd to March 3rd at the Nederland Recreation Center from 8am to 5pm for Futsal. Angela Fanette recommended leaving some time available for open use to citizens, and that the season would be a conflict with scheduled Spring Men’s Basketball League. Utilization for Futsal would be available from 8am to 1pm until February 11, 2011. Stephanie Gallagher made a motion to recommend to City Council to allow Futsal usage from 8am to 1pm in the gymnasium from December 3, 2011 to February 11, 2011. Joella Harvey seconded the motion. All voted aye. b. Consider a request from Brian English for a fall Basketball League usage for September and October. Angela Fanette provided information from a request from Brian English to use the Recreation Center gymnasium on September 19th, 26th and October 1st, 3rd and 10th for a tournament for high school age students. No profit would be made from the league, it would allow for continued play for student athletes in an organized setting. Joella Harvey made a motion to recommend to City Council allow play for the proposed dates. Stephanie Gallagher seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried. c. Consider a request from the Mid-County Optimist for the use of Doornbos Park for a Cross Country track meet on September 10, 2011. Angela Fanette presented a request from the Mid-County Optimist club for a Cross Country meet at Doornbos Park, including set up on September 9, 2011 and utilizing the park and Recreation Center on Saturday, September 10, 2011 until 2pm. This is an annual event held at Doornbos Park. This even t requires no additional costs from the parks department. Stephanie Gallagher made a motion to recommend to City Council to allow usage of the park and Recreation Center for a Cross-Country meet. Joella Harvey seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried. d. Discussion of a Water Safety Day at Doornbos Park for May 24, 2012 with sponsorship/partnership with Heather Miller. Heather Miller, mother of Brad Miller, has requested to partner with the City for a Water Safety Day for youth in the area. The day would consist of the Miller’s donation of life jackets to area youth participants, and the City Parks and Recreation Department would be responsible for hosting a location and Water Safety Tips from the American Red Cross for all participants. This would not be an additional cost to the Parks and Recreation Department as we do provide safety training in addition to our swim lesson program. No action was needed. e. Discussion of proposed budget purchases of softball field updates, toddler play areas and swing sets for parks for FY 2011-12. Angela Fanette provided information on budget requests in the amount of $10,000 for softball field repairs, $35,000 for toddler play areas, and $15,000 for swing sets, as most of the equipment is beyond salvage and is scheduled for take down. This would complete Doornbos Park replacement project of all playground equipment, and would be an initial start for field and dirt work for the field. No action was needed. f. Discussion of Fall Trash Bash 2011 set for October 22, 2 011. Angela Fanette provided information about the fall date for Trash Bash. Planning is ongoing for this program. No action was needed. g. Discussion of parks programs/donations. i. Swimming pool Angela Fanette provided a brief update on swimming pool progra mming, as the pool has made over $53,000 to date. 150 swimming lessons were taught, and the pool calendar was completely booked at a total of 220 pool parties. No action was needed. ii. Dog Days of Summer Angela Fanette provided information on the event Dog Days of Summer. The Humane Society of Southeast Texas hosted a Dog Days in the Park event at Doornbos Park on Saturday, August6, 2011. The event was held to increase awareness about caring for pets in summer months and to help the Humane Society increase adoptions and to let the public know of their needs. The event hosted moon bounces, face painting, and other events for children centered around responsible pet ownership. The event was well received by the public in the park. No action was needed. iii. Eagle Scout Project Angela Fanette provided information on a donation from Robert Geautreaux, and his son, requesting to donate planters to the front of the Nederland Recreation Building. The planters would be at no cost to the City and provide an area for flowers. Expected completion would be by the end of the year. No action was needed. iv. Rotary Donation for water fountains Angela Fanette provided information on a donation request from the Nederland Rotary Club to install new water fountains at Doornbos Pa rk. The request would be for new equipment and the City would be responsible for installation. No action was needed. v. Heritage Festival Grant A grant was given to the City of Nederland Parks Department from the Heritage Festival in the amount of $4000 to be used in field repairs. The Parks department and Board was grateful to the continued generosity from the Festival. No action was needed. 4. ADJOURN There being no other business, Joella Harvey made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Stephanie Gallagher seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.
